10. Sarah Silverman

Sarah Silverman opened up about dealing with depression and panic attacks in an essay for Glamour in 2015. The comedian first began struggling with depression and “terrifying” panic attacks when she was just 13 years old. She shared seeing several therapists and taking Xanax throughout her teenage years.

She even remembers telling her stepfather, “It feels like I’m terribly homesick, but I’m home. There’s no way to satiate it.” She adds, laughing, “I don’t know that I knew the word ‘satiate’ at that time, but … that’s what it felt like.”

Thankfully, one therapist took her off the Xanax and that was the moment she said she felt like herself again, after many years of battling with mental health conditions. However, it seems like there’s more to the story. Her depression and panic attacks came back in her early 20s.

Nevertheless, she managed to keep it under control with therapy and Kloponin (a medication that eliminates panic attacks by reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain). Currently, she says she still owns a bottle of Klonopin just in case she has a panic attack— “just knowing that they’re there is all I need,” she told Glamour.

“Since then I’ve lived with depression and learned to control it, or at least to ride the waves as best I can,” Silverman told Glamour. “I’m on a small dose of Zoloft, which, combined with therapy, keeps me healthy but still lets me feel highs and lows.”
