A large part of the participants received the Pfizer vaccine, while the others received a placebo. The good news is that only nine participants tested positive to COVID-19, six of which had contracted the South strain, but all from the placebo group, proving the fact that Pfizer’s vaccine works just as well against the B.1.351 variant.
As Sahin has explained, this evidence provides “the first clinical results that a vaccine can effectively protect against currently circulating variants, a critical factor to reach herd immunity and end this pandemic for the global population.”
