Who Actually Invented Zorbing?

In 1970s France, an architect called Gilles Ebersolt was probably the first to create a giant inflatable plastic ball for people to get inside and roll around, which he named the ‘Ballule’. However, Zorbing as we know it today was created in 1994 in New Zealand by Dwane van der Sluis and Andrew Akers.

At the time they were trying to develop inflatable shoes for walking on water. When this failed they came up with the idea for a new fun activity using a giant sphere. They called this the Zorb and then spread Zorbing across the world.
