25 of the Worst Hotels People Have Stayed In

Hotels can be fantastic places that inspire you and help you forget about all your problems. That’s what happens when hoteliers and the staff all work in sync to provide the best possible service to their guests. However, this isn’t a guarantee.

There are plenty of horrid hotels out there that make Stephen King’s hotel in ‘The Shining’ seem like a picnic near the Seine in comparison. Some hotels are so bad that they’ll have you screaming, running away and thanking the heavens that you’re safe in your own bed. We present you a list of the creepiest, most horrible, most disgusting hotels ever that are a shining example of what not to do. Upvote the worst hotel pictures, and share your thoughts in the comments, and check out our other posts about the worst hotel fails here and here. And scroll down for our interview with Dr. Gabor Forgacs from Ryerson University as we talk to him about the hotel industry and what makes hotels stand out from the crowd.

  1. I’m a frequent traveler 225 plus nights a year.
Checked into a new upscale hotel in North Miami. Only had a few guests and union “informational” picketing out front. Got to my nicely appointed room , only to find the heat turned all the way up and a slight toilet stench in the room. My habit has always been to check for cleanliness on any hotel, including bedbugs. Seemed ok. My last check is pulling back the bed covers and sheets.

Well, I found the source of the stench. Someone had crapped in the bed, then remade it smearing their load all over the sheets.
I notified the front desk who initially blew me off and just offered a room upgrade. I then requested they contact the local police for a report to be filed. (I’m ex LEO.) Had I gotten in this bed without looking I would have been exposed to who knows what.
Both the police and the executive manager showed up. Police had their lab take samples for dna testing. The manager gave me an another room and a card for free meals whenever I was in town – which was nice as I was there for at least a week out every month. I only ate there a couple of times for breakfast but appreciated her trying to make things right.
The state prosecutor contacted me a couple of months later to testify when they located the pig who did this. Apparently his dna was in the system and they knew him as a local agitator. He plead out and got 36 months for felony assault.
    I still check the sheets.

The Carter Hotel in NYC (a remnant of Old Times Square) is supposed to be pretty bad. The Hotel San Antonio in Tampico, Mexico had palmetto bugs in the shower drain (Naturally) the AC wasn’t very good, and there were large rats(!) running around outside. I also had itching of my belt line (Scabies) after staying there. I checked out after one night. Driving to Tampico with Sanborn’s (auto insurance for Mexico guide) they mentioned making a turn near the Hotel Rosalita with a resounding “(NO!!)” I was staying in a supposedly upscale place in Edison, NJ for a professional exam. I did #2 in the toilet…it wouldn’t flush. The maids came for two days straight and, apparently, did not attempt to flush or have the problem fixed.

I have had good and poor hotels in Myrtle Beach. Sometimes the problem is Attitude. I couldn’t dial out on the phone, so I called the front desk, and the Idiot girl says “SIR-if you couldn’t dial out you wouldn’t be sitting there talking to me!” I’m Educated-I know how to dial 9+1. A friendlier employee on another shift. sent maintenance up. They weren’t able to help, either, but at least he admitted that-yes-there was a problem. In this same place, there’s a lady who nags you to come down quickly to get your coupons. NICE, huh?? Except, then she tries to bulldoze guests into a timeshare lecture for one of their other properties. I won’t mention the Hotel name here-but I reamed them out pretty good on tripadvisor and yelp!

  3. I took a train to San Diego back in the day. ,to go to my youngest son’s grad from Marine boot camp the motel I stayed at was highly recommended I had just walked in the door and there was a huge roach on the tv
I called the desk and they just ignored me

I stayed at a motel near the airport in San Francisco some years ago and got in late and went to sleep. I got up during the night and the wall was moving! I turned on the light and the entire wall was covered with roaches! I left in a hurry!
I let the staff at the agency i worked in book me in a hotel in north Las Vegas Nev, i couldn’t sleep Because the continual gunfire kept me up. I was more comfortable in Saigon during the war!

  5. Best western in cordova tn off state line road , rooms are out dated. It looked like I enter into the 1990’s.lamps on night stand did not work, food on curtains, TV and outlet plugs were also out dated. The bathroom shower curtain was hideous and old. The towels were hard old outdated yellowish coloring. The hotel had the nerve to be very expensive.

  6. Try unpacking and finding the previous people left their dirty laundry in the Drawer, and the Maid missed it. Or, imagine getting ready to go to sleep. I always check out the bed before undressing. That’s when I noticed the small hole in the ceiling big enough for a camera lens. Good place to replaster using the toothpaste!
