18. What happened after Pocahontas met John Smith?

Correct: Pocahontas married John Rolfe
Incorrect: They fell in love and lived happily ever after.

The whole story of Pocahontas and John Smith falling in love is just a fabrication of Disney movie magic. In fact, Pocahontas was only 11 or 12 years old when Smith showed up. And while she may have rescued him from being killed by her dominant father, there is no proof that the two fell in love or lived happily ever after. The true story is far less Disney-friendly.

Initially, she’s been kept hostage by the English for some time. Then she became a Christian, changed her name to Rebecca, and when she turned 17, she married a tobacco planter named John Rolfe. The two had a son, and ultimately they traveled to England, where Pocahontas died when she was about 20 or 21 years old.
