These massive sales first started in 1878 when the department store John Wanamaker & Co. from Philadelphia put out smaller prices and different offers for sheets and towels, to attract new customers into the store in January. All the sheets and towels that were on sale were colored in white, and this is why this bedding sale became known as the white sale.
After this, there were other stores that implemented offers like these, and the discounts went from bedding to bath towels and kitchen linens. Up to this day, household storage items can also be found on sale in January, a perfect occasion to buy some new linens.
