We’ve gone through a variety of pandemics and epidemics throughout history but COVID-19 is different from everything that we’ve seen.
The new coronavirus is novel in so many ways. In a short period of time, coronavirus went from something we all heard about on the news to something we all experience, because it became our new reality, causing the shutdown of offices, schools, restaurants, theaters, and anything deemed “non-essential.”
It has changed everyone’s day-to-day lives, costing the world a lot from an economic standpoint. The fast spreading of this virus causes an infection called COVID-19 (short for “coronavirus disease 2019”), which has now been confirmed in all 50 states.
One of the many aspects of COVID-19 that is hard to understand is that there’s no road map for a pandemic of this magnitude. No one knows how long it will last, how many people will be infected, and, ultimately, how many will lose their lives.
It’s true that we’ve seen a variety of pandemics and epidemics throughout history, including H1N1, the Ebola virus, the 1918 flu pandemic (also known as Spanish flu), and AIDS, however, this is something else entirely and we’re definitely not ready for it.
Here are 10 ways the coronavirus is different from anything we’ve ever seen throughout history.
