People with dementia are more at risk for developing a severe COVID case.

According to the study, when analyzing hospitalization and death rates, the researchers also found that COVID patients who suffer from dementia are more at risk for developing a severe case. In fact, dementia patients are 2.6 times more likely to need hospitalization, and 4.4 times more likely to die from COVID-19 compared to patients who do not have this condition.

These findings were made after taking into consideration demographic conditions such as age, sex, nursing home residency, and other underlying health conditions. According to Kristine Yaffe, MD, a professor of neurology and psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, “It’s pretty convincing in suggesting that there’s something about dementia that makes you more vulnerable.”
