Just like it happened in the first wave of the pandemic when people stock up on certain key items, many stores are now experiencing the same issue: empty shelves. Even though Walmart executives are certain that they won’t have to deal with the same problem again, they have shared what items are customers buying in bulk these days.
As Walmart CEO Doug McMillon has shared on a Nov. 17 earnings call with investors, “It feels to me like we’ll work through this period of time better than we did in the first wave.” However, he recognized that in some areas of the United States, the company’s supply chain is still highly affected.
According to Walmart US CEO John Furner, the situation depends very much on the location. “We do see big differences, depending on the communities that you’re in,” he said, according to CNN.
McMillon has also added that he visited several of the company’s store last week, and he saw huge differences from one state to another. Therefore, the store’s supply varies very much on how people are feeling at that moment and how the COVID-19 situation is in each state.
The COVID-19 situation is not going very well in the United States right now. America is dealing with an average of 10.000 new cases each day, and more than 180 deaths per day. These numbers are very concerning, considering the seven-day average of daily new cases moved over 150,000 as of November 16th for the first time, as data from John Hopkins University has shown.
According to McMillon, “The recent rise in COVID cases throughout the country reminds us we must remain vigilant.”
“As we’ve done since the beginning of the outbreak, we’ll continue being disciplined about the safety protocols throughout our stores, clubs, distribution, and fulfillment centers.”
