68 Years! Queen Anne and King Michael I of Romania
You may not have heard of them, but these two had had one of the longest royal marriages in history! The two met at the wedding of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947 and that was the moment where the two apparently fell in love. It wasn’t long after that Michael proposed, but the pair had to flee their home country of Romania, as the communists took over the monarchy.
The King was forced to abdicate, but he still married Queen Anne in 1948 in an Orthodox wedding ceremony. The two later had a Catholic ceremony (as the Queen was Catholic) in Monaco in 1966. Unfortunately, the two spent a lot of time away from their home country, as they couldn’t return until the communist rule was abolished.
In 2016, when the Queen was 92 years old, she died and this put an end to their 68 years long marriage. The King died the following year.
73 Years! Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip
Are we really surprised? When you’re talking about the longest-ruling monarch ever, you would expect that her marriage would have been pretty long as well. The two met for the first time all the way back when she was 8 and he was 13 when they attended a wedding. However, sources say the then-Princess fell in love with Prince Philip years later.
It was announced that the two were going to get married in 1947, after Elizabeth turned 21, only for them to get married later that same year. They became the ruling monarchs later, when Elizabeth became Queen at age 27, despite her father dying when she was 25. At her coronation, her husband, Prince Philip, declared his undying loyalty.
The pair were married for a whole 73 years before the Prince Consort died in April of 2021. Despite this, the two have the longest marriage in British royalty, with Prince Philip being the longest-serving prince consort in Britain as well. They faced numerous crises together, including numerous personal tragedies, a pandemic, and a world war.
