Elliot Page
You probably remember Elliot back before he came out as transgender when he starred in the film Juno, which earned him an Oscar nomination in 2007. You may also remember him from the role of Shawna Hawkins in a “Tale of The City” or from the most recent role, as Vanya Hargreeves in Netflix’s hit show “Umbrella Academy”.
In 2020, Page came out and changed his name to Elliot. It may be seen as quite a controversial thing, as the show he is in is still running and the gender identity of that character is opposed to the one he has now. Yet, we commend him for his bravery and courage to express and be who he truly is, despite his popularity and the high status that comes with being one of the fairly well known Hollywood actors.
And if you are a die-hard fan of the Umbrella Academy, you can rest assured. It has been reported that Page plans to continue his role in the series.
Hunter Schafer
Despite not having an extensive track record of roles under her belt like the other people on our list, Hunter Schafer still made history with her role as Jules on the HBO show “Euphoria”. The role, despite being her first and taking her acting resume from none to small, is impactful for the community. Her character, Jules, is one of the only trans characters on TV that does not actually struggle with her identity!
This is a big thing, as with how big “Euphoria” has become, it is important to show that trans people have other issues aside from the challenges that come with their identity.
Hunter is also one of the voices in the English dub of the 2021 animation film “Belle”.
Alex Blue Davis
We all know how “Grey’s Anatomy” is trying to challenge “The Young and the Restless” for the longest running TV series (though they still have a long way to go, despite being a massive show by itself). Yet they did make room for progressive storylines and amazing moments in their show, for all types of people. Such is the character played by Alex Blue Davis, who is an openly trans man.
Their role has been amazing, as the showrunner has rewritten their coming out story a few times before settling on a powerful line of “I’m a proud trans man, Dr. Bailey. I like for people to get to know me before they find out my medical history.”, which the actor said moved him to tears at the table reading. It shows just how trans people feel and it helps the rest of us empathize and learn more about them.
You may have seen Alex in other shows on TV, such as “2 Broke Girls” and “NCIS”, so his face might just be very familiar!
