Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning film debut, Get Out, turns contemporary race relations into a popcorn horror movie, imagining a future in which black people are lured into wealthy white homes and brainwashed — essentially enslaved. The film is about the psychological consequences of racism, while also delivering a thrilling ride. It ‘s certainly a one-of-a-kind film that needs to be seen to be appreciated.
30. The Namesake
The Namesake, based on Jhumpa Lahiri ‘s novel, is another tale about what it’s like to be a child of immigrants, but more specifically, it’s about how that experience affects one’s racial identity.
No movie on this list is going to tell you everything you need to know about race. The topic is vast and brimming with complexities and disagreements. Nonetheless, watching all these films is a nice, diverse starting point from which to start the work. And that’s how films can change the outlook for racing: by giving viewers a place to start.
