Can the BA.2 variant be picked up by tests?
A lot of people are calling it the ”stealth variant”, meaning that it can’t be picked up by tests. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. It can be detected by both PCR and rapid tests. So, no it is not a stealth variant.
Is BA.2 more dangerous than the previous one?
Probably not, but there’s not enough data yet to be certain. All the aspects point to no, but we can’t exactly know for sure until there’s enough data. What we do know for now is that it’s not more likely for this strain to cause severe illness in comparison to the previous one.
Unfortunately, it can be 50% more transmissible. That means more hospitalizations, more infections, and, sadly, more deaths, even if it’s not more severe.
