Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a condition that fills your air sacs with fluid from the blood vessels present in the lungs, causing them to eventually fail. In this situation, patients need to use a ventilator, which can create long-lasting scars.

Additionally, Sepsis is an infection that prompts a life-threatening immune response. This infection can also contribute to long-lasting tissue damage.

But according to Panagis Galiasatos, an expert on lung disease at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, the good news is that many lung injuries have the ability to heal.

“There’s the initial injury to the lungs, followed by scarring,” he said in a statement. “Over time, the tissue heals, but it can take three months to a year or more for a person’s lung function to return to pre-COVID-19 levels.”
