According to The Mayo Clinic, tinnitus is a ringing in the ears that only an afflicted person can hear. Researchers say this is actually a common symptom that affects more than 20 percent of individuals. According to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, tinnitus is not a disease, and manifests through a constant sound like a buzzing, humming, roaring, clicking, or hissing in the ears.

But now you might wonder, what’s the connection between long COVID-19, also known as ‘post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection’ and tinnitus? Research has the answer.

A November 5 study published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health focused on examining 3,103 people from 48 countries. The researchers discovered that 40 percent of the participants who experienced COVID-19 symptoms had more chances of experiencing a worsening of their existing tinnitus as well.

However, the participants who never experienced tinnitus before developed it after becoming infected with the virus.
