Continuity chaos
Game of Thrones fans couldn’t help but notice a Starbucks cup wrongly left in the crucial scene of the HBO series, but other TV and film mishaps also cost studios a lot of money. When Warner Bros. gathered the Justice League for some badly needed reshoots, Henry Cavill (Superman) was in the middle of shooting 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout which required him to have some pretty heavy facial hair. He had to film the shots with a mustache and, according to Looper, Warner Bros. spent millions of dollars digitally removing the unwanted hair from the Justice League film to make Superman appear as his smooth self. It seemed to be all for nothing as they were roundly mocked on social media and in the press for the poor job they did in replacing this now famous mustache.
Lost in space
Many people lose their sunglasses or a set of keys, which is frustrating and can be expensive to replace. But in 1999, NASA lost a $125M Mars orbiter because of what CNN called a “metric mishap.” The mistake occurred when Lockheed Martin engineers used English measurements (inches, feet, etc.) in their calculations as opposed to NASA’s metric calculations (centimeters, meters, etc.). Because of this navigation information could not be properly transferred and the orbiter was lost.
Bad apple
Throughout the years, we’ve heard a lot about the founders of Apple, Steve Jobs, and Steve Wozniak, because the tech giant has changed the way we live and do business. But there was a third founder of the giant who once owned 10% of the business and whose name is Ronald Wayne. Wayne was an Apple founder for just 12 days before he agreed to sell his share to Jobs and Wozniak for only $800. Ironically, the corporation is now worth $1 trillion, according to NBC News.
