1. Fire Escape

The first fire escape was invented by a woman in 1887. Her name was Anna Connelly and she came up with the idea of creating a fire escape at a time when women weren’t allowed to vote or even work outside the home. She was the first to submit her idea to the patent office.

Connelly’s design was also a cost-effective strategy for improving people’s safety. Because the staircases were added to the exterior of existing buildings, there was no need for expensive building remodeling. She is one of the first female investors from de U.S. and she’s directly responsible for saving the lives of thousands of people for nearly 150 years.

In this day and age, it’s hard to imagine how our lives would have been if we didn’t have a safe way to get out of buildings during fires.
