Paper bags used to look a lot like envelopes until Margaret Knight invented the machine to attach flat bottoms to the bags that they became what we think of as modern paper bags.

Margaret Eloise Knight (February 14, 1838 – October 12, 1914) was an American inventor, known for the creation of the flat-bottomed paper bag. She has been called “the most famous 19th-century woman inventor”.

She was a self-taught engineer who bagged a valuable patent, at a time when few women held intellectual property.
