The new study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, using data from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxicity Forecaster (ToxCast) in order to identify TBHQ’s effects on humans’ health.
For those who don’t know, TBHQ is a preservative used for lengthening a product’s shelf life. However, people need to make sure they’re avoiding this preservative, as it has been linked to damaging the immune system, by affecting T-cells, B-cells, and NK cells.
But even though PFAS are usually used in packaging, they can still ‘contaminate’ the food inside. As the Environmental Working Group (EWG) study has found, not only do these chemicals affect consumers’ immunity, they can also lead to several myriad health problems, including increased cholesterol levels, weight gain, low birth weight, and even several cancer types.
And especially now, in the context of a global pandemic, it’s very important to prioritize your immune system’s well-being. As Olga Naidenko, PhD, EWG vice president for science investigations and lead author of the study has explained, COVID-19 has forced us to take a look at all the environmental factors that could affect the immune system.
