
Some states are seeing a drastic increase in new coronavirus infections, as re-opening initiatives continue around the world, raising significant questions as to whether re-opening attempts have been premature and how officials can balance public safety and avoid further economic harm.
If you’ve been paying close attention to COVID-19 case numbers and death tolls around the country, you know there’s cause for concern. States are re-opening nationwide and the epidemic appears to be mostly concentrated in areas that were once major hotspots. However, the coronavirus pandemic continues unabated in other areas of the U.S.
The rise in new cases is also related to the easing of lock-down measures over the last six weeks. Many of the states that were among the first to ease restrictions, including Arizona, Florida, and Texas, are among those to set records regarding the number of new cases in the past week.
“The next couple of weeks are going to be critical,” Dr. Anthony Fauci told Congress on Tuesday, citing the “disturbing surge” that is “not going to disappear.”
