4. Arizona

The past week has been a rough one for Arizona, which has seen the overall case count rise from about 38,000 to 58,000 in seven days of the entire pandemic. As of Tuesday, its positive test rate was 22.5 percent, up from 6.7 percent on May 22. And even though Arizona is increasing the number of tests performed, a significantly higher proportion of these tests are coming back to be positive than they were a month earlier.

On 15 May, Governor Doug Ducey made Arizona one of the first states to lift restrictions, a decision that some experts always cite when talking about the growing number of cases in the state. He also barred local officials from passing mask orders until last week.

The most troubling stats coming from Arizona could be those linked to hospital bed capacity. On Monday, the use of hospital beds, ICU beds, and ventilators by COVID-19 patients were all at an all-time high. As reported by AZCentral.com, 83 percent of hospital beds and 84 percent of ICU beds are filled with COVID-19 patients.
