Dr. Fauci’s Update Regarding the New COVID Strain

Just a few days after the new mutated version of COVID-19 was firstly discovered in the U.K., the state of Colorado just reported the first infected person with the highly contagious coronavirus strain on Dec. 29.

On Dec. 30, California also reported its first case, and this highly contagious form of the virus is expected to make its presence seen in the United States as well. However, the good news is that even though the new COVID-19 strain can spread very quickly, experts were able to find out more about it, including how it can affect our bodies and how serious it can get.

According to Anthony Fauci, MD, another good news might be that previously infected people are expected to be safe from getting infected again with the new mutated version of the virus. During an interview with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other infectious disease experts, Fauci recognized that he’s not at all surprised that the new COVID-19 strain arrived in the United States.

He also mentioned that a new study conducted by the researchers across the Atlantic gave us a little more hope in these hard times, saying that individuals who have antibodies and were previously infected with the virus are most likely safe.

According to Anthony Fauci, “The…thing that they’ve noted in the U.K. is that people who have been infected [by the previously dominant strain] don’t seem to get re-infected by this [mutation], which means that the immunity that’s given to you when you get infected is protective against this particular strain,” he explained.

Additionally, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director announced that the new virus strain could pause the efforts previously taken to put an end to the pandemic.

“The overwhelming majority of mutations are irrelevant…They don’t have any impact on any important function of the virus,” he said. “[Only] every once in a while [do] you get a mutation that does impact a function of the virus.”

Read on to discover how this COVID-19 mutation is compared to the original one!
