Illinois has been struck hard by coronavirus, as the New York Times reports. This has the fourth-highest number of incidents in the world (over 130,300) and the fourth-highest number of deaths (over 6,200). Proportional to the population, this corresponds to a rate of 49 deaths per 100,000 people.
In addition, the highest death rate in the state is in one of the smaller counties, the Union, with a rate of 82 deaths per 100,000 people. Cook County, the country’s second-largest county, has had the most deaths overall and has a death rate of 77 per 100,000.
