It’s been two weeks since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, launching the most major military attack in Europe since the Second World War, all this at the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The country has been ravaged by war, displacing over 2 million people, destroying major cities, and injuring civilians, the elderly, women and children included, with the most recent atrocity committed against the people of Ukraine being the bombing of a maternity hospital that housed heavily pregnant women and newborn children.
While everyone watches in horror and we hear about what is happening on the other side of the Atlantic, there are still a lot of questions to be answered. And while many are comfortable putting this onto the fact that they like to call President Putin a crazed megalomaniac, not many have stopped to ask themselves why this has happened: Why did Russia invade their neighboring country? What do they want from them?
With this war being an extension of the conflict between the two countries that has been ongoing for the past eight years (since 2014), we can look back in history and see what happened. Because as we are about to see, there are several moments in history that have involved the two countries that may have contributed to this moment.
Let us know if you knew about these countries’ difficult past before!
