If you don’t like where a conversation is headed, a poor reception is an ideal scapegoat. There might be a little bit of noise on the other side or a little break in the recording, but if you really wanted to hear what the other person was saying, you would.

When your boss asked you to write a proposal that you knew he ‘d probably end up refusing, you decided to ignore the request yourself.
