How Many Galaxies Do We Know Of?

It’s believed there are hundreds of billions of galaxies in the observable universe, but the exact number isn’t known. To count them all, astronomers need to be able to look deep enough into space, and far enough back in time, to see when galaxies were formed.

Using current telescopes, they can see galaxies just over 13 billion light years away, but the universe is 13.8 billion years old, so there is still some way to go. Plus, each telescope can only see a small area of sky at a time, so astronomers can only use their images to make an estimate of how many galaxies are in the entire universe.
