Jack the Ripper

As Biography.com reports, one of the most popular unsolved mysteries of all time is the identity of Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer who terrorized London’s East End neighborhood in 1888. Despite the investigation of the five murders, the identity and motive of “Jack” are still unknown.

The assumptions about the true identity of the killer are just as inventive. Many theorists claim that the famous Victorian painter, Walter Sickert, is guilty, while others say that he may have been the grandson of Queen Victoria. However,  there have been more than 100 alleged suspects. More recent investigations indicate that a Polish immigrant is a very likely suspect, although there are disputes about the DNA results, according to Biography.com. That’s why so many films, TV shows, and Ripper books always pop up.

Tank Man

In 1989, an unknown man stood in front of tanks ordered to brutally murder student protesters during a pro-democracy demonstration in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. British tabloids nicknamed the lone protester “Tank Man” because he continuously blocked the tanks’ paths that day. Afterward, the man was forcibly removed, and the tanks continued.

His identity is still unknown, but he was recognized for his actions by the likes of Time who referred to him as the “unknown rebel” in the list of the 100 most important people of the 20th century.
