California is once again in perilous territory, with an average of 19.6 new daily coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents. On July 9, Governor Gavin Newsom revealed that the state had exceeded its previous single-day death toll, with 149 Californians dying in a 24-hour period, a major increase from the previous daily record of 115 deaths recorded on April 22.
On 6 July, Newsom implemented new steps to prevent the spread of the virus, including the closure of indoor events, including dining, film theaters, museums, zoos, and other entertainment facilities in 19 counties, which were especially hard hit by COVID.
