Demi Lovato had always been very honest about her experience with addiction and sobriety throughout her career. She became her acting career in 2002 when she was just 10 years old. She also struggled with eating disorders and bullying at school, which eventually made her request homeschooling.
Demi started struggling with addiction in 2010 when she punched one of the dancers during the Jonas Brothers: Live in Concert tour. She was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder and followed a treatment for this condition.
She definitely had a lot of ups and downs when it comes to drug abuse, as she admitted to being under the influence of cocaine while filming several Disney shows and her own documentary a few years later. Even so, she continued to remain open and share her experience with the whole world.
She even released a song called ‘Sober’ in 2018, implying that she relapsed after six years of sobriety. One month later, Demi was hospitalized due to an overdose and almost lost her life.
She shared in her ‘Dancing with the devil’ 2021 Docuseries on YouTube that she allowed herself to have a drink here and there, which soon led to drug abuse and she found herself again in the same position.
She also opened about her entire experience with substance abuse in this new documentary.
The song she sang at the Grammys, ‘Anyone’ is also about her addiction journey, and she was visibly emotional during her performance, especially because it was her first public appearance after the overdose.
She also acknowledges that sobriety is something you have to carry with you your entire life, and it’s a constant battle. However, she now calls herself ‘California sober,’ meaning that she now allows herself to drink alcohol in moderation and smoke marijuana.
