Kamala Harris was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
After attending high school in Canada at McGill University, Kamala Harris moved to Washington, D.C. in 1986, where she studied political science at economics at Howard University. She returned to California a few years later where she attended the Hastings College of Law.
However, very few people knew that Kamala Harris was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority at the Howard University. At that time, the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority was the first Black Greek Letter Organization for women in the United States.
She even wore a string of pearls on the campaign trail because she wanted to honor the Divine Nine (the council of the nine historically Black fraternities and sororities). The string of pearls is a symbol of the sorority’s founders.
She even mentioned during a 2018 interview for The Breakfast Club radio show that she learned a lot at Howard University, but mainly how she didn’t have to live up to someone’s limited perspective of what it means to be a Black woman.
