Kamala Harris has been born in a Jamaican and Indian immigrant family.

The first woman in the office was born on October 20, 1964, at Oakland, California’s Kaiser Hospital in an immigrant family. Her mother, Dr. Shymala Gopalan was an Indian American immigrant and breast cancer researcher, while her father, Donald Harris, was a former professor of economics at Stanford, born in Jamaica.

Her parents met in 1962, while they were both students at the University of California at Berkeley. We could say it was love at first sight, as they got married the next year. As Kamala’s mother said during an interview for SF Weekly in 2003, she was planning on studying at the University of California at Berkeley, but she wasn’t planning on remaining here, in California.

However, she fell in love instantly with Kamala’s father and got married soon after, and then the kids came, Dr. Gopalan added. The two got divorced in 1972, and Kamala and her younger sister, Maya, have been raised by their mother.
