Kamala Harris’s first name is rooted in her South Asian heritage.
Even though she’s been present in the political scene for several years now, some people still struggle to pronounce her name. Kamala means ‘lotus flower’ and has a very deep meaning in the Indian culture, that’s why her mother wanted her to have this name, to protect her cultural identity.
But that’s not the only meaningful vice president Harris has. Her middle name is Davi, which means ‘goddess’ in Sanskrit, paying tribute to the Hindu religion. Her mother shared in a 2004 interview with the Los Angeles Times that she chose these two names for her daughter to pay tribute to a culture that worships goddesses and creates strong, powerful women.
