1. Alabama

Although the raw figures coming out of Alabama are not as dramatic as those in other countries—693 cases and 23 deaths on Tuesday — the state has been second in the number of new cases per capita over the last two weeks. According to Reuters, with 5,115 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 38,442, Alabama saw a startling 116.6 percent rise in week-end cases on July 02.

Local health officials report that problems in fighting the virus in Alabama include high rates of diabetes, kidney failure, heart disease, and high blood pressure. COVID-19 has taken a particularly serious toll on Black people, who make up 24 percent of the state’s population and 44 percent of virus deaths.
