5. California

On Monday, California added 5,813 new cases to its positive test count, breaking the previous daily record of 4,250 cases. On Tuesday, the record was broken again when the state for the first time faced 6,000 new cases. The number got even higher, on Wednesday when it shot up over 7,000.

Los Angeles, which reports 2,000 new cases a day, is the epicenter of the state’s pandemic. Whereas the statewide positive test rate is 4.8%, L.A. is 8.8%. Since more than 88,500 people tested positive for the virus, L.A. has seen more infections than any county in the U.S.
