We may never reach her immunity, Fauci says.
Fauci believes we may never achieve herd immunity due to the low vaccination rates. As data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown, more than 100 million people in the United States are fully vaccinated at this moment, while half of the population has received at least the first vaccine dose.
However, recently we’ve experienced a decrease in vaccination rates, which is very concerning according to many health experts. The vaccine is not being administered too slowly, which will make it impossible to achieve the 80 percent needed in order to reach herd immunity.
This vaccine inequity could mean that the virus will be present with us even after the number of cases goes down. According to Rustom Antia, an evolutionary biologist at Emory University in Atlanta, this virus won’t go away anytime soon.
“But we want to do all we can to check that it’s likely to become a mild infection,” Antia added.
