1. Pripyat, Ukraine

Pripyat, a city in northern Ukraine was once home to nearly 50,000 people before the town was abandoned in April 1986. This is definitely the most famous ghost town in the entire world, and there’s even a famous HBO series about it, called “Chernobyl.”

Just two kilometers from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the city was evacuated when the Nuclear Station exploded. The explosion had generated extremely dangerous amounts of radioactive chemicals into the air, which polluted millions of square miles in many European countries.

Three decades later, this ghost town resembles a freeze-frame of the communist period from the Soviet Union in 1986. People left Pripyat and all their belongings, from furniture and clothes to children’s toys and even pets. As there was no time and the radiations were extremely dangerous, people left in a hurry and left everything behind. All the clocks are frozen at 11:55 because that was the moment when the electricity was cut.

These days, the radiation levels have finally dropped enough for scientists to mark the area as safe for people to visit it. You can explore the most famous ghost town of all time, where you can find everything from schools, hospitals, stores, gyms, cinemas, factories, apartment buildings, and even an amusement park.
