6. Heights
Acrophobia, commonly known as fear of heights, is the top phobia in only two states! A lot of people do not like being suspended in the air, but not a lot of us are paralyzed by going up flights of stairs that are not supported. We think a lot of people would be scared to walk on a glass bridge, but most people from Georgia and Idaho voted this to be their number one phobia.
5. People
Known under many names, the fear of people can be very debilitating. The National Institute of Mental Health groups it together with the fear of social gathering or social phobia, but anthropophobia is just the fear of people.
While it may seem like something trivial, the people who suffer from this cannot go outside, and everything that requires human interaction is too much for them in these six states: Arkansas, California, Kansas, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania. Interesting how the states with the most populated cities also have the fear of people at the top of their fear list.
4. Needles
No one likes needles, but some of us can deal with them quite okay. It has to be done to get immunized during flu season, to have blood drawn, or for more serious interventions or shots. However, the people of Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, and Wisconsin find it very difficult to do any of those as they have trypanophobia, the fear of needles.
Can’t say we cannot understand them, but we are also happy we do not suffer from it.
