One year since COVID emerged in the United States and the pandemic doesn’t seem to want to leave very soon. People all over the country cannot wait to get back to their old, pre-pandemic lives, but we might have to wait a little longer, as the number of cases continues to rise in the U.S.

With COVID-19, one thing is sure…gatherings can contribute to spreading the virus quite rapidly, but some locations are more dangerous than others. According to experts, some places are so high-risk right now, that they should be closed immediately until we see a significant decrease in the number of cases across the country.

Bars are currently very dangerous and Robert R. Redfield, MD, the former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), believes they should be closed immediately until further notice.

While mass businesses have been closed in order to stop the spread of the virus, Robert R, Redfield mentioned that he always believed the fight against COVID can go hand in hand with a functioning economy.

As he mentioned on January 20 in his exit interview with The New York Times, “It wasn’t an either/or—we showed that in schools. You can still keep businesses, hospitals, et cetera, open and do it in a safe and responsible way.”

But he also added, “I would argue that having people in a crowded bar, drinking three or four beers without their masks, talking louder and louder so they spray their respiratory secretions further and further, is probably something that needs to be curtailed,” he continued saying.

Additionally, Redfield’s opinion is supported by research, indicating that indoor bars are considered one of the most high-risk places right now, as they’re poorly ventilated and overcrowded, which makes it very easy to transmit the virus to others.

Moreover, an analysis made by The Washington Post showed that the reopening of bars and restaurants in September 2020 contributed to a number of cases twice as high in the first three weeks.
