Just like many other famous people, Macklemore also turned to drugs because the pressure of fame felt too heavy, so he was looking for an escape. The rapper admitted in 2015 that dealing with his newfound fame put a lot of pressure on him until he reached a point where he felt very stressed and ‘burnt out’.
He used to hide his drugs and sleeping pill in his shoes, so he wouldn’t get caught. He also mentioned that he felt very stupid while doing it, he felt like he was 15 years again, trying to smoke a week and not get caught.
After a while, he decided it was time to do something about his problem and started recovery once again. His decision was prompted by the fact that his girlfriend was pregnant with their first child, so he really felt like now would be the perfect time to act like a grown-up.
After a few years of sobriety, the rapper told Dax Shepard that he relapsed again in 2020. Sobriety is a journey, and even when there might be easier days, there will also be those hard ones where you need a lot of ambition not to give off and use again.
