Information about mask guidance
We can all remember the early days of the pandemic when no one was sure if masks could offer protection against the virus, and the US government was still trying to figure out mask guidance.
Their move was definitely highly criticized by a lot of people. However, Fauci wrote in an email sent to a former US health secretary, that masks are important mainly for those who already have the virus, in order to prevent them from spreading the virus and infecting other people who are not infected.
Therefore, the mask wasn’t supposed to protect people from getting infected with COVID-19, its purpose was to prevent those infected from transmitting it. Fauci also wrote in his email that store-bought masks are not effective in preventing COVID-19 infections, because the virus can pass through the material.
The next month, Anthony Fauci received an email from a friend working in the Chinese public health field, mentioning that the media misquoted him by saying the West made a huge mistake for not asking people to wear a mask.
However, Fauci replied with: “I understand. No problem. We will get through this together.”
