Maine
Maine is currently in the orange category, with 17.7 cases per 100,000 residents. While the state had a super spreader wedding that hit the headlines earlier this year, currently it is ranked 49th out of 50 states, meaning that they’re handling their outbreak pretty well.
However, the state has seen a recent increase in the number of cases, which made the state’s health officials worried. According to Maine CDC Director Nirav Shah, MD, the state is seeing surge after surge.
In the past week, the positive test rate has increased from 3.96 to 4.72, the state hitting its highest rate of daily cases on Dec. 7, with more than 427 cases reported in a single day. According to researchers, even though Maine is still in the orange category, it might not take long until the state will move past 25 infections per 100,000 and will enter the red category.
“We’ve hit another mark that I hoped we would never hit,” Shah explained in a tweet on Dec. 7 mentioning the figures. “Sadly, this may not be the last time.”
