4. Maman, Ottawa, Ontario (and other places)

This statue was created by Louise Bourgeois, a French-American artist, and sculptor named Maman, which is the informal French word for “mother,” and I know there are many people out there that can’t even look at them. It is a 30-foot bronze spider with a sac that contains 26 eggs made of marble. This “masterpiece” was unveiled at the Tate Museum Of Modern Art in the UK in 1999.

The artist said: “The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother.”

Do you think that spiders are “friendly presences?” Let us know in the comment section.
