19. ”Young Woman Powdering Herself”
As the name itself tells, Georges Seurat’s painting is about a woman who put makeup on herself. Even though the woman looks innocent there’s much more to the painting than that.
There are a lot more things to know and explore about this late 19th-century art-work. Some researchers analyzed the painting with x-rays and they discovered another painting on the top left corner of the wall. It is a flower painting which was initially a self-portrait of Seurat. He covered it because someone told him that it looked confusing.
The interesting fact about this story is that it was only later discovered that the woman in the painting was the artist’s mistress Madeleine Knoblochand. And the hidden self-portrait was the only one that Seurat ever did.
