17. ”The Persistence of Memory”
Salvador Dali created this work of art in 1931. It symbolizes a subjective time and the flexible hours uneven filling the space. Three clocks can be seen in the painting, one stands for the past, one for the present, and the last one for the future.
Dali himself confessed that he made this painting thinking about Einstein and his theory of relativity when drawing those watches.
There is a 4th clock in the copper color that is covered in ants, which is a symbol of decomposition. The ants aren’t the only insects present in the painting, there is a fly sitting on the clock that is next to the copper one. The fly has a human shadow that can be seen when the sun hits it.
