6. ”The Ambassadors”
Hans Holbeinthe Younger painted ”The Ambassadors” in 1533 based on an illusion at its base. Depending on the angle you’re watching it you’ll see different things. If you look from right to left, it appears as a human skull. Researchers see it as a reminder that death can happen at any time and it’s always around the corner.
Others, on the other hand, see it as a reference to ”memento mori”, a saying in Latin that translates as “remember you shall die.” Memento mori was the life motto of the man who ordered the painting, Jean de Dinteville, he is on the left.
