Even though the riots happened mostly outdoors, Anthony Fauci still considers it is a ‘superspreader event’.
Anthony Fauci, MD, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also talked about the recent events in Washington, D.C. on the ABC7 channel. He believed the people who were in the crowd put themselves at very high risk for contracting coronavirus, as many of them did not follow the safety measures needed to protect them, such as wearing face masks, social distancing, and avoiding large crowds.
“The fact that it was outdoors is a little bit better than if they were indoors completely,” Fauci added.”But you can still have a superspreader situation when you do things in a crowded way.”

The last superspreader event in the United States was the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
It’s almost impossible to determine how many people assisted in the riots and at the events that cause the Capitol incident last week. But according to Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and the Associated Press, the crowd size started from as little as 2,000 people and went up to 80,000.

I think we can all remember the last superspreader event in the United States, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, a 10-day event in South Dakota that took place in August last year, where more than 460,000 people attended the event. Back then, more than 414 COVID-19 cases were linked to that event, and 13 states were involved in the surge, as data from USA Today has shown.
