The carpets aren’t clean
Anything that doesn’t look conspicuously clean should be a concern once you’ve stepped into your hotel room. When you check the beds and the bathrooms for any ickiness, make sure to take a look at the carpets as well.
Hill cautions that “nasty carpets usually mean nasty sheets and towels and coffee cups.”
The age of the carpet has nothing to do with this because an older carpet can still be clean it is well-maintained. Also, check the carpet from small patches that do not match the whole thing. It is a sign that instead of replacing the whole carpet or cleaning it well, they removed and switched a stain by covering it with a patch.
