After the song was released on March 3, 1989, it sparked a lot of controversies all over the world. The music video was condemned by the American Family Association and The Vatican for its ‘profane’ imagery.
The song was also used in a Pepsi commercial, which made several religious groups protesting it, and the advertising campaign was eventually canceled. Additionally, Pope John Paul II urged people to avoid listening to Madona’s song and not attend her concert as well.
Moreover, “Like a Prayer” was also banned in Russia and Egypt.
