Avoiding eye contact usually signals a lack of confidence. Especially during job interviews, maintaining eye contact is very important in order to engage with your potential employers and create a connection.
As Travis Bradberry, author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0, has explained, avoiding eye contact or having shifty eye movements will make you seem suspect and even creepy, so don’t be surprised if you don’t get the job.
“Looking down as you talk makes it seem like you lack confidence or are self-conscious,” he continued saying. Therefore, your words might not come out as powerful as you’d wish, and they will lose their effect.
Make sure you avoid constantly watching the clock or checking your phone to see the time because it will be seen as a sign of disrespect like you don’t want to be there.
