We’ve gone from handshakes to elbow bumps, and this will likely stay with us for a long, long time, according to Malia Jones, who researches social environments and infectious disease exposure at the Applied Population Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

However, there’s some good news about hugging, as it is considered less harmful than a kiss on the cheek and even a handshake, and that’s because we tend to turn our faces away, according to Susan Hassig, an associate professor of epidemiology at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Even so, health experts consider these greetings are totally unnecessary and recommend we avoid them altogether. We can definitely use other methods to greet one another, without having to touch the other person, Jones added.

And waving is definitely one of them, she continued saying.
